Binchester Roman Fort Binchester Fort is situated in the centre of County Durham, just outside of the town of Bishop Auckland. Binchester was the largest Roman fort in County Durham. A small part has been excavated and is open to view. Most of the fort and the remains of the nearby civilian settlement still lie buried in the surrounding fields. Auckland Castle As a centre for education and tours, the Castle offers insights into English history since the Norman conquest. Ghost tours are held most evenings- please check availability. Durham Castle Guided Tours of Durham Castle. Entrance is by guided tour only. Each tour lasts about 45 minutes. Tours take place on most days out of term, and each day from Easter to 30th September. For other periods tours are on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
